Stinson Park (Christmas Creek) QLD

Camps Australia wide 3 Ref. 635

GPS 28°17'16 S  153°02'13E (pretty close to that anyway.  Check Google Earth)

Stinson Park is commonly used as a stepping off point (in lieu of O'Reillys or Binna Burra) by day trippers for the hike to the wreck site of the Stinson aircraft crash which threw the O'Reilly family into prominence in 1937.  The park is on the western side of the Great Divide and not far from the boundaries of Lamington National Park.  Though very little of the wreck is still around, the challenge of hiking to the site is taken by a few.  If you decide to take the hike, be well prepared for a good long walk and the possibility of an over night camp enroute.  Be warned though the area does get cold!  So be prepared.  It is also recommended that you check with the Rangers Office before proceeding

The main camp site is about 40 k SE of Beaudesert off the Mount Lindsay Hwy.  Take the Christmas Creek Rd split to the left and continue on  for a further 18 K to Christmas Creek.  The undulating dairy country does mean care has to be taken as there are a number of blind rises and bends and dairy cattle do cross the road as part of their daily milking routine.  Just over the bridge is another intersection where you take another left.  The road, though narrow is sealed and easily navigated by all vehicles.  From the intersection 9 k will see you at Stinson Park.  There are both camping and non camping areas so ensure you park in the right spot.  Enquiries 07 5540 5339.

OK, so what's there?  Wheelie access is no problem.  Two toilets for both sexes.  Sorry, no showers.  Cold water creek though, if your heart can cope.  Site would cater for about a dozen vans.  An electric BBQ or camp fire cooking.  All sites are grassed and most are shaded by local trees. Limited fresh water is available.  This is not a dog friendly site.  Big signs indicating No Dogs!!!

Cost.  Stinson Park is controlled by Beaudesert  Shire Council and is a self registration site.  Adults $3.50 each per night.  Children (5 - 15) $2.00 ea per night and families (2x4) $10.00.  Children under 5 - no charge.  Just slip the payment into the envelope and into the sealed box.  Tag your tent or van and enjoy your stay.
